First Academic and Professional Exchange Symposium – Asia and the Middle East: Internationalisation and the Convening of Foreign Specialists at FAD-UCALP (La Plata, 28–30 September 2026)
From 28 to 30 September 2026, the Faculty of Architecture and Design of the Universidad Católica de La Plata (FAD-UCALP) hosted the First Academic and Professional Exchange Symposium – Asia and the Middle East, as part of Design Week 2026. Conceived as an inaugural event, the symposium constituted the pilot phase of FAD International, an initiative aimed at consolidating the international outreach of the academic unit, under the aegis of its Extension Secretariat.
The programme unfolded across three synchronous sessions held via Zoom, with speakers from India, Finland and Mexico affiliated with the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts at Shanghai University. Convening foreign specialists through academic networks connected to the Sinophone sphere made it possible to bring together, in a single space of conversation, perspectives on art and design drawn from diverse geocultural contexts that are seldom represented in the local educational agenda. The direction and design of the cycle were led by the Extension Coordination Office, under Arch. Claudia Vecere, and by Dr. Flavia Luck, faculty member at FAD-UCALP and holder of a doctorate from the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, Shanghai University. Technical coordination was provided by the FAD Secretariat.
The inaugural session featured Gupta Shatrudhan (@shatrudhan.gupta), a multidisciplinary artist and researcher who lives and works between India and China. He completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts and his master’s degree in Visual Arts at the College of Arts and Crafts, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lucknow (India), and is currently a doctoral candidate in Fine Arts at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, Shanghai University. The session was moderated by Mariana Guerrero, a sinologist and editor of the journal Amigos Uruguay China (@amigosuruguaychina).
The second session was delivered by Anna-Maija Rissanen (www.annamaija-rissanen.com), a Finnish-Belgian visual artist, painter and art educator, doctoral candidate at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, Shanghai University, and holder of a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels. Her artistic practice explores transitions and transformations across time and space through mental landscapes composed of the elements of mountain and water, in dialogue between Chinese and Nordic visual traditions. Moderation was undertaken by Cristina Ghetti (@cristinaghetti.visualartist), an Argentine visual artist based in Spain.
The closing session featured Pilar Mejía Buenfil (Mexico), PhD candidate in Art Theory at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, Shanghai University. At the same university she completed a master’s degree in Global History, specialising in Chinese Studies, at the College of Liberal Arts (2017–2020); she also holds a bachelor’s degree in Design and Visual Communication from the Faculty of Arts and Design at UNAM. Her doctoral research examines the construction of national identities through the image and is developed in dialogue with academic interlocutors and archives in Mexico and China. The session was moderated by Milena de Moura Barba (@miluspanda), a doctoral student at the University of São Paulo, who undertook an academic exchange at Xi’an International Studies University during her undergraduate studies and completed a master’s degree in Film Directing at the Beijing Film Academy.
From the standpoint of internationalisation, the initiative is significant for three reasons. First, it tests a model of virtual mobility that lowers the economic and logistical barriers of in-person exchange. Second, the composition of the panels, with speakers from India, Finland–Belgium and Mexico and moderators linked to Uruguay, Argentina–Spain and Brazil, reveals the networked character of cooperation between Asia and Latin America, which circulates through shared educational trajectories rather than through bilateral channels. Third, the linguistic and cultural mediation undertaken from within the host academic unit proves to be a condition of possibility for transnational dialogue. With this first edition, FAD-UCALP sets a precedent for a sustained policy of internationalisation grounded in academic cooperation and horizontal knowledge exchange.
